Random Reports

1 Oct.Unfortunately your scribe has been away a lot during the last few weeks so the news page has been rather neglected. So here is a summary of recent events. Please let me know of alterations, additions, pictures etc. Some of the following has been stolen (with his permission) from Rob’s Newsletters.

Auriac

**The curious poster on the left was snapped by Michael and Ann while they were in the Dordogne.

**Huge congratulations to the B League team on winning the league this year, not only to those who won the semi-final and final but to those who helped make it all possible during the season.

**The B League team reached the semi-final which was played in Swindon last week where they beat Bath 3-2. Richard Way, Nick and Caroline (who had never played in a league match before) made up the team. They then had to play the final against Sidmouth at Taunton, winning 3-2. The team had Richard and Caroline as before but with Ian replacing Nick. The cup was presented to our team by Roger Buckley, Chairman of the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs. For a full copy of this report, see Rob’s newsletter.

**Don played in the Senior’s Championship in July and the Spencer-Ell Selector’s event in September, unfortunately with no great success.

**Richard and Rosemary played at Budleigh in September, coming, I believe, in the middle of the pack.

**The Bear went to Wales for their jolly. See report and pictures on the Silver Jubilee Page.

**Brian had a double this year winning both the Association and the Golf KOs.

**The doubles KO was won by Kate and Paul.

**My thanks to everyone for playing their matches so promptly despite many obstacles being placed in their way!

13 Aug.League match results, copied from Rob's August newsletter.

Success after success! The B League continues its winning streak by beating Broadwas 3-2, beating Llandaff 5-0, and Worcester gave us a walkover because they could not raise a team. This means they are now in the semi-finals. Brilliant B Bears! The Intermediate League beat Worcester Norton 6-1 The Federation League beat Broadwas 3-2 and beat Swindon 4-1 but lost to Kingston Langley 1-4.

25 Jul.Congratulations to Pat Francis who won the Cheltenham Challenge Cup last weekend, winning all 6 games.

5 Jul. The Intermediate League team beat Worcester 6-1.

Another successful day for The Bears

Broadwas

28 Jun. Report by Rob. Glorious sunshine and two crack teams beat the opposition into submission at Broadwas today with the B League Team (Kate, Ian and Richard W) winning 3-2 and the Federation Team (Matthew, Tim and Robert) also winning 3-2. At lunchtime, Kate had passed the trigger point for her handicap to drop to 14 but unfortunately, she was beaten in the afternoon by the Broadwas Bandit so she will have to wait for another day before her handicap drops. It is believed that this is the first time The Bears have beaten Broadwas on away matches but the sloping lawns held no problems for today's teams. As always, Broadwas hospitality (and teas) were second to none and six very fat Bears travelled back down the M5.

IntvDyff

21 Jun. The beginners team beat Swindon 5-0.

14 Jun. The Intermediate team (pictured) unfortunately lost to Dyffryn 2-3.

Don wins the Veterans' Championship

20 Jun. Don had a successful time at Budleigh Salterton, winning his block and then the best of three final to take this year's Veterans' Championship. He also, in partnership with Nigel Graves, won the Y Handicap doubles.

Kate

TV Star!

15 Jun. Here is the lovely Kate as she appeared in a recent programme on the Schools Channel talking about maths teaching at Thomas Keble School.

Rob60

Birthday Boy!

10 Jun. Yet another milestone in our Jubilee year. This time it is our Chairman Rob who celebrated his 60th birthday. Here he is at the lawns with his birthday cake, made by Rosemary.

Nailsea

4 Jun.Well done to the Intermediate team, beating Cheltenham 5-2.

4 Jun.Don had success last weekend, winning the Nailsea Advanced weekend. The picture shows him being presented with the cup by manager Marcus Evans.

4 Jun.Richard and Rosemary went to the Parkstone handicap W/E at the same time. No trophies, but they had an enjoyable time.

BBQ

4 Jun.Don played in the Gloucestershire inter-counties team again this year. It was a successful event for us as we came second and gained promotion back to the first division. There was some excitement on Monday when the BBQ drip tray caught fire! The team comprised Don, Louise Bradforth, Dave Foulser, Dave Munday, Dave Kibble and Paul Smith (Capt.). The event is played as open doubles with three pairs.

WMay

21 May. In absolutely foul conditions at Bath last weekend, Don and Carol won the Walter May Doubles Tournament. This was Carol's first ever tournament, so it was a great achievement for her. Their four winning scores were +2, +3, +1 and +2, all on time! Rob and Brian also played, winning half their games.

21 May. On the same weekend the Beginners team unfortunately lost 1-4 to Dyffryn but the Federation team fared better. Report by Matthew.

The Bear team (myself, Tim Blades and Keith Apperley) triumphed in our Federation match against Dyffryn today, winning 4-1. Keith and I won the doubles in the morning +15 whilst Tim won his singles convincingly +23. Unfortunately I had a bad dose of "can't hit the ball straight" in the afternoon, eventually losing my singles -12 on time, but Tim again won convincingly +16 and Keith snatched victory at the end of his match winning +1 on time. A very wet but ultimately successful day.

KK25

21 May. Keith and Kate celebrate their silver wedding anniversary this year. Congratulations to them from all at the club.

Don70

21 May. The Bear Members give a rousing welcome to Don's 70th birthday, including a cake specially baked by Rob!

15 May. Playing for Cheltenham, Don won both his B03 golf games to help them to a 6:1 win over Blewbury in the Inter-club competition.

15 May. The Bear Intermediate team beat Broadwas 3-2.

15 May. Don won 5 games out of 7 to come second in the Ramsgate open W/E. Don and Faith were very kindly put up by Ann and Michael.

Lesson

8 Apr. Don gave a series of three talks on "Knowing the Laws can improve your game" at RDS Tecnology. We wait to see if those attending now improve their game!

Snooker Snooker Snooker

2 Apr. Report by Rob. After an exciting and nail-biting final to the winter snooker competition where every game went to the final black ball to decide its outcome, Richard Way was victorious with a convincing win. He also picked up the prize for the most improved index. Richard Danby and Rosemary Danby, who hosted the competition, have provided a superb venue and hospitality throughout the winter months and Richard will enjoy his prize for being runner-up in the competition. The small pictures show Rob presenting, left, the runner-up prize to Richard D. and right, The winners prize to Richard W.

You may be interested in the picture of the club member, who had not heard that the last snooker evening had been cancelled. At least he brought his own wine. Now thawing out and expected to make a full recovery.
